Donate a Car
In the state of Virginia and across the country, Americans are donating their cars to charity. Both local and national institutions are being improved because of the offerings provided and the ensuing profits that they earn. This is creating a wonderful system in the United States. By helping people ‐ the greater institution ‐ they are in turn helping others as best as they can.
To successfully donate and then make a tax deduction, follow these steps:
- Contact the charity and verify if they are an IRS-approved, 501(c)(3) organization.
- Drive the vehicle to their headquarters, and transfer the vehicle title to the charity.
- Wait for the charity to give you a bill of sale and a copy of a title change.
- If your vehicle is worth more the $500, attach an IRS Form 8283 to your tax filing. If it is worth more than $5,000, the tax filing will require an outside appraisal.
Lastly, in order for your vehicle to be considered a donation, you may not accept any goods or services in exchange for it.
